Zuma Arms Deal Trial Moved to September 9

The Pietermaritzburg High Court has postponed the corruption trial of the Former President Jacob Zuma’s fraud to the 9th and 10th of September, 2021.

Judge Piet Koen heard the application for the postponement virtually following the former President’s hospitalization, last week.

Zuma is currently serving a 15-month sentence for contempt of court.

French Arms company Thales is a co-accused in the trial. The State and the defence have agreed that a medical report on the former President is submitted no later than August 20th.

The court also granted a request from the State’s Advocate Wim Trengove that the State appoint a medical doctor of their own to examine whether Zuma is indeed fit to stand trial.

Reacting to this, Zuma’s attorney, Dali Mpofu said, “the parties have nominated the 9th of September as the next date. It might well be that for the sake of prudence we might put the date not just the 9th, but the 9th, 10th, and 11th assuming that so that if the medical report is negative,  then we will obviously use only the 9 but if it is positive we will use those dates as provisional,”
