The former South African President Jacob Zuma’s uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party, is preparing to join an alliance of several opposition parties, creating a new force to challenge the ruling African National Congress (ANC) and its newly formed coalition in parliament.
Zuma‘s MK party will align with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and others, marking a shift from the historically dominant Democratic Alliance (DA), which has been the primary opposition since 1999 in South African politics.
The ANC faced a significant setback in this year’s election, failing to secure a parliamentary majority.
Ramaphosa maintained his position by securing a majority of votes from ANC members, with the DA and other parties backing his candidacy in parliament last week.
Both Zuma’s MK and Malema’s EFF originated from the ANC due to internal conflicts and a focus on addressing issues affecting black South Africans. They accuse the ANC of neglecting its black voters and failing to provide economic empowerment.
South Africa continues to grapple with severe challenges, including some of the highest levels of unemployment, inequality, and violent crime in the world.
