Three French diplomats have been expelled by Burkina Faso after the regime said they were involved in “subversive activities”, the Burkinabe Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a notice to France.

The notice dated April 16 however did not give further details.

They have been declared persona-non-grata and asked “to leave the territory of Burkina Faso within the next 48 hours” Two of the diplomats are political advisers at the French Embassy in Ouagadougou.

Relations between both countries have soured since Captain Ibrahim Traoré took power in a coup in September 2022.

The military administration has leaned towards Russia, effectively severing its ties with former colonial power France.

Since they took power two years ago, the junta has forced France to recall its ambassador, shut France’s military base and suspended some French media platforms.
