Bayern Munich dropped points for the second consecutive Bundesliga match as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Union Berlin on Saturday, allowing defending champions Bayer Leverkusen a slim chance to close the gap in the title race.
Having suffered a shock home defeat to Bochum last week, Bayern struggled to break down Union’s disciplined defence. A win for Leverkusen against Stuttgart on Sunday could reduce Bayern’s lead to just six points.
Despite dominating possession, Bayern found it difficult to create clear chances. Their best opportunity in the first half came in the 51st minute when Harry Kane struck a free-kick through the wall, only to be denied by Union goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow.
Leroy Sane finally put Bayern ahead in the 75th minute, weaving through the crowded penalty area to convert a Josip Stanisic pass. However, Union responded strongly, and Benedict Hollerbach capitalised on an error from Bayern’s rookie goalkeeper Jonas Urbig to level the score.

Union pushed for a historic first-ever victory over Bayern in the closing stages but had to settle for a draw—continuing their strong home record against top Bundesliga teams. Dortmund, Leipzig, Frankfurt, Mainz, Freiburg, and now Bayern have all failed to win in Berlin this season.
Elsewhere, unlikely Champions League contenders Mainz and Freiburg played out a 2-2 draw. Mainz, reduced to 10 men after Dominik Kohr’s red card in the 43rd minute, twice took the lead, but Freiburg responded each time. The result leaves Mainz in third and Freiburg in fifth, with both teams chasing a first-ever Champions League appearance.
Meanwhile, Borussia Moenchengladbach bolstered their European hopes with a 4-2 win at Werder Bremen, thanks to a hat-trick from Alassane Plea. His two first-half goals put Gladbach in control, but Bremen fought back with quick goals from Romano Schmid and Andre Silva. Plea struck again early in the second half before Tim Kleindienst sealed the victory.
Augsburg extended their unbeaten run to 10 league matches with a 1-0 home victory over Wolfsburg, as Phillip Tietz scored the only goal. Augsburg have conceded just three goals in 2025—the lowest tally in Europe’s top five leagues this calendar year.
The Bundesliga action continues with RB Leipzig hosting Borussia Dortmund in Saturday’s late game, a crucial fixture for both teams’ Champions League qualification hopes.
