Ghana’s Schlupp in 2019 AFCON fitness race

The tournament kicks off on 21 June with Ghana’s first match scheduled for 25 June against Benin in Ismailia

Ghana international Jeffrey Schlupp is a major doubt for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations after the Crystal Palace star picked up an ankle injury in the Eagles’ recent 3-1 home loss to Manchester City.

“Unfortunately my season has come to an end a few weeks early due to an injury,” Schlupp tweeted.

“Time to work hard and come back stronger ready for pre-season,” the 26-year-old added.

The tournament kicks off on 21 June with Ghana’s first match scheduled for 25 June against Benin in Ismailia.

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson also confirmed the news and seemed to suggest a June return date has been set, which will mean Schlupp faces a race to prove his fitness before Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah names his squad for the Cup of Nations.

“We have been a little bit unlucky in this latter period,”  Hudson said, speaking at his pre-match press conference.

“It started with Mamadou [Sakho], then we lost James [Tomkins] and now we’ve lost Jeff [Schlupp], which is, of course, three big blows for us.

“He won’t play again this season, the ankle injury is such that it will take the three or so weeks we have left [to heal].

Schlupp, who can play in defence or in midfield, has scored five goals in 37 appearances for the Eagles this season.
