Universities in Nigeria are responsible for acquiring, developing, and instilling proper value orientation for the survival of individuals and societies. However, not all institutions provide quality education, and some of those that do come with hefty price tags. 

According to Punch, here is the list of the 15 most expensive private universities in Nigeria in ascending order.

15. Covenant University, situated in Otta, Ogun State, is affiliated with the Living Faith Church Worldwide and holds membership in esteemed organisations such as the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the Association of African Universities, and the National Universities Commission. Known for its high fees, it ranks among Nigeria’s most expensive universities, with programmes typically ranging from N1.1m to N3m, covering meals but excluding accommodation.

14. Joseph Ayo Babalola University, located in Ikeji-Arakeji, Osun State, Nigeria, was founded in 2004 by the Christ Apostolic Church Worldwide. Renowned for its costly BSc Nursing, Medical Laboratory Technology, and Law programmes, each academic session can amount to between N1.3m and N1.5m.

13. Ajayi Crowther University established in 2005, is a private faith-based institution situated in Oyo State, Nigeria. Its Law programme carries a fee of N1.7m, while Nursing is priced at N1.4m.

12. Caleb University located in Imota, Lagos, stands among Nigeria’s most costly private universities. The top fee, paid by law undergraduates, totals N1.4m, excluding supplementary expenses such as matriculation fees and ICT certification.

11. Redeemer’s University, situated in Ede, Osun State, boasts itself as one of Nigeria’s premier private institutions with a flexible fee structure, permitting payments in three instalments. Their undergraduate Law program costs N1.447m, followed by the Bachelor in Nursing at N1.1m.

10. Babcock University, positioned in Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, is owned by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Its LL.B in Law programme leads the list at N1,539,990 without feeding.

9. Benson Idahosa University, situated in Benin City, Edo State, is a private Christian institution offering programmes including Medicine and Surgery, Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science, and Law, with fees ranging from N1.2m to N3.5m per session.

8. American University of Nigeria, located in Adamawa State and founded by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, imposes a fee of N3.511m for its premier undergraduate engineering programme, with accommodation and meal costs not included.

7. Bowen University, situated in Iwo, Osun State, is a private Baptist Christian institution renowned for its high fees, notably for its Medicine and Surgery programme, which costs around N3.8m. Additional charges encompass BBSF, Entrepreneurship and Soft Skills, Internet Access and Portal Management, and Health Care.

6. Igbinedion University, Nigeria’s first private university situated in Okada, Edo State, is known for its commitment to quality education. Final-year medical students can pay up to N4m as tuition, excluding sundry levies.

5. Pan-Atlantic University, based in Lagos, offers its B.Eng Mechatronics programme at N3.9m to N4.4m, covering reading materials and academic facilities.

4. Afe Babalola University, founded by Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), is another expensive institution. First-year Medicine students are charged N4,567,500, and final-year students pay N5,586,000, excluding accommodation and other fees.

3. Lead City University, in Ibadan, Oyo State, offers MBBS Medicine and Surgery at N5.5m per session, along with Nursing, Dentistry, and Pharmacy programmes at N2.5m each.

2. Nile University, located in Abuja, charges N5.95m for its Medicine and Surgery programme, covering tuition only.

1. Wigwe University, situated in Isiokpo, Rivers State, tops the list with a tuition fee of N12m, including accommodation fees.
