The Kogi Police Command has started a search for six Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials who were attacked while delivering election results on Sunday in Obajana.
Police rescued 96 victims from the scene, including INEC employees, ad hoc staff, bus drivers, and others, and transported them to INEC headquarters in Lokoja.
Three injured victims were airlifted to Lokoja’s Federal University Teaching Hospital for care.
SP Williams Ovye-Aya, a police spokesperson in Kogi, stated in Lokoja that the Commissioner of Police, Mr Yekini Ayoku, had already directed the deployment of operational and tactical assets to the scene of the attack.
“The police commissioner tasked his men to conduct a thorough investigation that could lead to apprehending the miscreants and bringing them to deserved justice,’’ Ovye-Aya stated.
He commended the gallantry displayed by police operatives who engaged the attackers in a gun duel and urged residents of the adjoining communities to report anybody seen with bullet wounds to the nearest security agency.
