Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture, launched the Advertising Offenses Tribunal on Thursday in Abuja and tasked the tribunal’s members with carrying out their mandate meticulously to advance moral standards and professionalism in the advertising business.
In order to maintain equality, transparency, fairness, and impartiality in all disputes and offences committed or allegedly committed under the Act, the tribunal, which is presided over by Justice Cecilia Olatoregun, was founded. Mr. Charles Odenigbo, Mr. Moroof Aileru, Ms. Julia Oku Jack, Alhaji Bello Kankarofi, and Mr. Idorenyen Enang are the other four tribunal members.
According to Lai Mohammed, the Federal Government’s desire to strengthen the role and authority of the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) for the effective regulation of advertising, advertisement, and marketing communication in Nigeria is based on the knowledge that the country’s advertising sector has a significant opportunity to impact the country’s economic development.
Mohammed noted that the government realised that in order for the Tribunal to exercise the authority granted by the Act, it needed people with relevant experience and knowledge of both the Nigerian legal system and the Nigerian advertising industry. As a result, Mohammed said, the government decided to appoint the deserving individuals and inaugurate them.
The tribunal’s new chairwoman, Judge Olatoregun, thanked the minister and ARCON for their confidence in the panel’s members and assured them that they would do their best work. Judge Olatoregun also praised Dr. Lekan Fadolapo, Director General of ARCON, for his strategic leadership. She also extended her gratitude to her tribunal coworkers for their readiness to represent the country through the tribunal.
The D-G, Dr. Fadolapo, praised the minister for his cooperation with ARCON and dedication to raising professionalism in the advertising industry.
“While I’m congratulating our industry and members of the panel for today’s landmark achievement, I will single out our minister, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, for his pragmatism and commitment to upping the game in the advertising industry. Under him, the industry has witnessed the most entrenched reform which has redefined practice and boost professionalism,”
