Seven children in the Democratic Republic of Congo have died following a fire in a camp housing hundreds of displaced families.
The Mushobezo camp, located in the eastern part of the country, was housing families rendered homeless after deadly landslides and floods had destroyed their village Bushushu near Lake Kivu in May.
Reports say the fire had started in the middle of the camp before expanding to the other areas, razing down 420 temporary shelters.
Several adults are receiving treatment for various degrees of burns. According to the United Nations estimates, about 3,000 families were left without homes after floods destroyed the Kalehe region of eastern DR Congo.
U.N. climate experts have attributed the floods and landslides in the area to warming temperatures due to climate change, which are increasing the frequency and intensity of rains in the continent. The region had already been plagued by attacks from armed insurgencies.
