The 2023 Global Organised Crime Index places Nigeria sixth in the world for organised crime. According to the research, Nigeria is still dealing with several security issues, corruption, and other criminal activity. Nigeria was placed fifth with a score of 7.14 points in 2021, the most recent year for which the data was made available.
The Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime’s “Global Organised Crime Index- A Fragmented World” report, which was published on Wednesday, indicates that Nigeria’s level of organised crime has risen by 0.13 points.
Nigeria placed second in Africa and sixth overall with a score of 7.28 out of 10, behind only the Democratic Republic of the Congo (7.35) and ahead of South Africa (7.18).
The countries with the lowest criminality scores are Mexico (7.57), Colombia (7.75), and Myanmar (8.15).
The research stated that “crime rates are rising globally, but resilience measures are not keeping up with the threat.”
Nigeria received 8.50 points for its criminal network score while earning 7.20 points with an increase in the criminal actors category.
The survey’s score climbed by 0.50 in that category, indicating an increase in the number of foreign criminal actors operating in the nation.
The nation received 5.50 points for the existence of mafia-like organisations, 7.00 points for actors in the private sector, and 7.50 points for actors that are part of the state.
According to the research, financial crime has surpassed human trafficking as the most common kind of criminal activity worldwide. Nevertheless, since 2020, there has been an increase in human trafficking activity.
Human trafficking, the sale of cannabis, the manufacture of weapons, and financial crime were the next four most serious crimes in the world.
