Cricket South Africa (CSA) has announced the departure of long-standing Proteas women’s coach, Hilton Moreeng on Friday, May 10.
Having steered the South African women’s cricket team since 2013, Moreeng’s resignation marks the end of an era.
Assistant coach Dillon du Preez will take up the interim role, stepping into big shoes after Moreeng’s illustrious 11-year tenure.
During his time in charge, Moreeng played a pivotal role in transforming the Proteas women’s setup into a professional unit, overseeing a staggering 279 matches across various formats.
The 46-year-old’s journey with the team led to notable achievements, including leading the Proteas women to their first ICC World Cup final last year, where they narrowly missed out on glory against Australia.
Reflecting on his departure, Moreeng expressed gratitude to the players, team management, fans, and media for their unwavering support throughout his coaching stint. He also thanked his family and friends for standing by him during the highs and lows of his coaching career.
“Coaching at the international level has been an extraordinary journey filled with countless memorable moments and achievements. These experiences will forever hold a special place in my heart.
“I want to express my sincere appreciation to all the players and team management who have been instrumental in this journey. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work alongside each of you.
“I would also like to thank the South African fans and the media for their unwavering support throughout this journey. Your encouragement has been a constant source of motivation.
“Last but certainly not least, I am deeply grateful to my family and friends who have stood by me through the highs and lows along the way. Your love and support have been my rock,” Moreeng stated.
Assistant coach Dillon du Preez will step in temporarily, as CSA has already initiated the process to find a new head coach.
Enoch Nkwe, Director of Cricket at CSA, expressed confidence in Du Preez’s ability to maintain the team’s high standards during this transitional phase.
The Proteas women’s team faces an exciting yet challenging journey ahead, with the Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh scheduled for late September.
The Proteas women are gearing up for a thrilling campaign, including a home series against England in November, which promises an action-packed cricketing season ahead.
