Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter has reached a remarkable milestone, celebrating his 100th birthday and becoming the first ex-president in U.S. history to reach this age.
Carter, who has been in hospice care for the last 19 months, has endured several health challenges. In 2015, he revealed that cancer had spread to his brain, though by the end of that year, he was declared cancer-free after treatment. In 2019, Carter experienced a black eye and a fractured pelvis in separate accidents and later underwent surgery to relieve pressure on his brain.
In early 2023, the Carter Center, the nonprofit founded by the former president, announced his decision to enter hospice care at his Georgia home following multiple short hospital stays.
Carter, who served as the 39th president from 1977 to 1981, received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his humanitarian work in resolving international conflicts and advancing human rights. He lost his bid for re-election at the age of 56.
His last public appearance was nearly a year ago, when he attended the funeral of his wife. His centennial birthday was met with widespread celebration, with tributes from President Joe Biden, former President Barack Obama, and other prominent figures honoring his extraordinary life and achievements.
