Terrorists in Nigeria have adopted a new tactic by using wall clocks as timers to detonate Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), targeting critical government infrastructure, recent investigations have uncovered.
This method recently caused extensive damage to the Shiroro/Kaduna transmission power network, leaving many northern states without electricity.
Sources disclosed that the terrorists aim to maximise destruction while disrupting essential services.
Speaking under anonymity, an official confirmed;
“Terrorists have resorted to using wall clocks to detonate IEDs because of the method’s ability to evade detection. They are specifically targeting critical infrastructure with the aim of inflicting severe damage.”
In response, Nigerian security forces have stepped up their operations to tackle this emerging threat. Specialised training programmes are being conducted for military, intelligence, and law enforcement personnel.
These sessions equip operatives with the skills needed to detect and neutralise explosives before they can cause harm. Regular counter-IED drills and assessments are also underway to keep first responders prepared.
“The trainings are meant to bring the special operatives up to speed with the complex nature of terrorism, especially as it relates to what I just mentioned above.
“In specific terms, the specially-selected personnel are to be equipped with advanced knowledge and skills on how to counter IEDs, thereby frustrating bomb attacks on critical infrastructure of government,” the official stated.
The National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), in collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), has been leading efforts to curb terrorism. Through regular assessments, drills, and inter-agency collaboration, first responders and bomb technicians are being equipped to handle emerging threats.
“A lot is being done by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), through the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), to stop the excesses of terrorists, insurgents and all violent extremists – wherever they might be hibernating,” another source disclosed.
Recent exercises, such as the 2024 Crisis Response Exercise, have emphasised inter-agency cooperation to counter terrorism and extremism effectively. Officials have assured the public that ongoing operations have led to the elimination of many terrorist commanders and fighters.
“If my memory serves me right, the ONSA recently conducted the 2024 Crisis Response Exercise, to underscore the importance of inter-agency collaboration, cooperation and synergy. So, the days of terrorists and other violent extremists testing the resolve of the State, are numbered.
“Let me also assure members of the public that the Military, Security and other law enforcement agencies have maintained aggressive posture towards criminals, leading to the killing of most of their commanders and fighters,” the source said.
