Red Bull Salzburg have named German Thomas Letsch as their new head coach, just two days after dismissing Pep Lijnders due to “unsatisfactory performances.”
The 56-year-old Letsch has signed a contract until June 30, 2027, the Austrian club announced on Wednesday.
“It is important that we develop together as a team,” said Letsch, who was previously sacked by Bundesliga side Bochum in April.
A familiar face at Salzburg, Letsch has coached the club’s U16 and U18 teams as well as their UEFA Youth League side.
Lijnders, formerly Jurgen Klopp’s assistant at Liverpool, had only taken charge in July. He was dismissed with Salzburg languishing in fifth place in the Austrian Bundesliga, trailing leaders Sturm Graz by 10 points.
In the Champions League’s revamped league phase, Salzburg finished 32nd after losing five of their six matches.
Joining Letsch as assistant coach is German Kai Hesse, 39, who replaces Vitor Matos, also let go as part of the shake-up.
Since Red Bull’s takeover in 2005, Salzburg have dominated Austrian football, winning the league more than a dozen times.
