The Anambra State Ministry of Health recently celebrated the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) for achieving a remarkable milestone of providing care to 2 million individuals globally.
Dr. Tonia Mbagwu, the State AIDS Programme Coordinator, emphasised AHF’s vital role as a partner in the state, tirelessly delivering innovative care for people living with HIV and AIDS.
Since beginning operations in Anambra State in 2017, AHF has provided comprehensive HIV care and services to 2,028 individuals across 11 health facilities in seven local government areas. They also offer HIV testing services in approximately 20 additional healthcare facilities.
The celebration of the 2 million lives in care attracted the entire HIV/AIDS sector, including representatives from the Ministry of Health, the National AIDS Control Agency (NACA), international partners like USAID, the Centre for Disease Control (CDC), PEPFAR, as well as local stakeholders and patient associations led by the Network of People Living with HIV and AIDS in Nigeria (NEPWHAN).
The Anambra State Ministry of Health, led by Commissioner Dr. Afam Obidike, along with Permanent Secretary Dr. Oby Uchebo and Acting Director of Public Health and Disease Control Dr. Afam Anaeme, expressed their appreciation for AHF’s resilience and ongoing support to the state, hoping for enhanced collaboration in the future.
During the celebration, Dr. Chukwuma Anyaike, the Director of Public Health at the Federal Ministry of Health, presented an award to Anambra State. Dr. Mbagwu accepted the award on behalf of the ministry and handed it over to the Permanent Secretary.
This celebration highlighted AHF’s significant contributions to combating HIV/AIDS in Anambra State and beyond, reinforcing the importance of continued collaboration and support for future advancements.
