A highly anticipated film directed by Kunle Afolayan will now debut exclusively on Netflix on November 6, 2020.
Kunle Afolayan’s highly anticipated film, ‘Citation’ finally has a release date following Covid-19 influenced delays. Citation had been earlier billed for a theatrical release in August 2020. Word on the street now has it that the movie will make a straight to VOD release.
According to a Twitter announcement by Netflix, the upcoming film will make its debut on Netflix by November 6.
The movie which is a debut for billionaire business man’s daughter, Temi Otedola, the CEO of JTO fashion, follows the story of Moremi, a young postgraduate student who suffers sexual harassment at the hands of a lecturer. Temi Otedola stars in her breakout role as Moremi alongside Jimmy Jean Louis, Joke Silva, Adjetey Anang, Gabriel Afolayan and Ini Edo.
Who is Kunle Afolayan? Why is Citation so highly anticipated?
Well asides the beautifully put together and definitely carefully selected cast which consists of screen made and absolutely fantastic actors and actresses, here’s why the movie is so highly anticipated.
Kunle Afolayan has since 2005 been active in the Nigerian film industry. He has made several extremely popular titles. Among them are The Figurine: Araromire – in Yoruba and English languages; Phone Swap featuring Wale Ojo, Joke Silva, Nse Ikpe Etim and the legendary Chika Okpala.
The Figurine won five major awards in the African Film Academy and experienced tremendous success in the Nigerian movie theaters.
In 2011, Kunle Afolayan appeared at the Subversive Film Festival adjudged to be the world’s second largest, with his colleague Zeb Ejiro as representatives of the Nigerian film industry.
In May 2013, Phone Swap premiered in France at the first edition of NollywoodWeek Paris and won the Public Choice Award.
Afolayan’s father Adeyemi Josiah Afolayan (Ade-Love) was a famous Nigerian artist in the second half of the 20th century who created the traveling theatre Nigeria became known for, before turning with the tides to the film-making industry.
Afolayan is the CEO of Golden Effects Pictures, a Nigerian film and production company incorporated in 2005. The company’s feature films include Irapada, The Figurine, Phone Swap, October 1, Roti, Omugwo, The Tribunal, The CEO and Mokalik. All of which can be described as blockbusters that left people glued to their screens, in awe and or in stitches.
Kunle is not shy to speak up against the ills and problems of the society. This has also cost him a lot.
On April 6, 2015, Afolayan posted a tweet which implied that Igbos of Nigeria are the majority group behind copyright infringements in Nigeria. The resulting backlash from fans led to an apology from Afolayan and an explanation that he was concerned about the piracy of his films, and most especially threats on the potential release of unlicensed copies of October 1, his latest film at the time.
Pirated copies of October 1 went ahead to hit the market on 13 April 2015.
