Chief Emeka Anyaoku, former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, led a delegation of prominent figures to meet with President Bola Tinubu at Aso Villa on Friday, advocating for the creation of a new Constitution for the country.
The delegation, under the banner of The Patriot, argued that a new Constitution is essential to address the persistent issues plaguing the nation. Anyaoku emphasised that the current Constitution is inadequate for leading the country to prosperity, attributing it to the ongoing social and economic challenges.
Following their meeting with President Tinubu at the State House, the group spoke to State House Correspondents, urging the President to swiftly send a presidential bill to the National Assembly. They called for the establishment of a constituent assembly tasked with drafting a new Constitution that reflects the diverse nature of the country.
The proposed draft Constitution, they suggested, should be subjected to a national referendum, allowing the people to decide on a new framework that would address the nation’s challenges.
The delegation, which included Senator Shehu Sani, Mike Ozekhome, Labaran Maku, Senator Ben Obi, and Segun Osoba, among others, expressed confidence that a new Constitution could be formulated within nine months, asserting that the existing one is at the root of the country’s difficulties.
