Apple unveiled major updates to its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities on Wednesday, incorporating OpenAI’s ChatGPT into its native applications, including the Siri virtual assistant on iPhones.
In a significant move for the privacy-focused tech giant, Apple has partnered with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into its Writing Tools and Siri, enabling iPhone and iPad users to access the AI chatbot seamlessly within Apple’s ecosystem.
First announced in June, this marks Apple’s most ambitious foray into generative AI as it seeks to rival competitors like Google and Samsung, which have already introduced similar AI features in their Android-powered devices.
Since OpenAI launched ChatGPT in 2022, Apple has faced scrutiny over its AI strategy, especially as Microsoft and Google rapidly deployed AI-driven products.
The new ChatGPT capabilities are part of Apple’s broader “Apple Intelligence” suite, which also features an AI-powered image editor called Image Playground and an emoji generator named Genmoji.
Initially, the updates are being rolled out in six English-speaking countries, including the United States, Canada, Britain, and Australia. Apple plans to expand support to 11 additional languages later this year, beginning with an April software update.
