Residents say that during an attack on a community in the South West region of anglophone Cameroon on Thursday, armed militants razed cars, fired at residents, and set other property on fire.
Since 2017, militants have been battling to create an independent state named Ambazaonia in Cameroon’s minority English-speaking regions. The North West and South West regions are the locations of their attacks, kidnappings, and murders.
Residents in the South West village of Muea gathered around the remnants of a razed vehicle on Thursday as two men hauled out a body wrapped in a blanket.
Two bodies were recognised and removed by sobbing relatives, according to reports.
Residents reported that numerous people were killed when the militants arrived early in the morning the week after schools resumed after the summer holiday.
Insurgents started clashing with the Cameroonian military in 2017, following the violent suppression of peaceful rallies by the country’s English-speaking minority.
Schools are frequently the subject of attacks, which has severely affected Cameroon’s educational system. As in previous years, separatists had imposed a lockdown and instructed schools not to reopen.
