Kemi Badenoch, leader of the Conservative Party, has once again criticised the Nigerian government, labelling them “terrible.” Speaking on Thursday during her first speech of the year at an event organised by Onward, a British think tank, Badenoch expressed concern about the consequences of “terrible governments” like Nigeria’s potentially unfolding in the UK.
She highlighted her personal experience of growing up in a poor country, watching her relatively wealthy family lose everything due to inflation and government mismanagement.
Badenoch made clear that she did not want the UK to follow a similar path. “I don’t want Britain to lose what it has,” she stated, reflecting on her family’s struggles and the impact of ineffective governance.
Her comments have revived criticism of Nigeria, a theme which has drawn disapproval from Nigerian leaders, including Vice-President Kashim Shettima. Shettima accused Badenoch of “constantly denigrating” her homeland. Prior to becoming Conservative leader, Badenoch had criticised Nigeria’s politics and security situation.
