Bandits abducted several students of the Confluence University of Science and Technology, Osara, Okene in Kogi State on Thursday after they invaded in numbers.
Eyewitness accounts say the bandits entered the university around 9 p.m. while some students were preparing for their upcoming exams. Sources said they gained entry through the bush and proceeded into three lecture halls, before firing shots to frighten the students.
Before security officials arrived to engage the bandits, they had already escaped with some kidnapped students, reports say.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Abdulrahman Asipita confirmed the incident but did not disclose the number of students abducted.
“I don’t talk to journalists on incidents like this, but I want you to know that we are on top of the situation,” he said.
Nigeria security forces are tackling a wave of kidnapping that has swept across the country with students especially being taken for ransom.
