The President of the United States, Joe Biden, on Sunday, proclaimed January 9 as a national day of mourning to honour the late President Jimmy Carter, who passed away that afternoon at his home in Plains, Georgia.
Carter, who lived to the age of 100, passed away peacefully after nearly two years in hospice care.
In his proclamation, Biden urged Americans to visit their places of worship to “pay homage” to the former president. He also extended an invitation to people worldwide to join in mourning the loss of this respected leader.
“I call on the American people to assemble on that day in their respective places of worship, there to pay homage to the memory of President James Earl Carter, Jr,” Biden said in a White House proclamation.
“I invite the people of the world who share our grief to join us in this solemn observance.”
