Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, has been released from the hospital after undergoing surgery for a leg injury sustained during a confrontation with police in Bulindo, north of Kampala.
Initially, his party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), claimed he had been shot, but later clarified that he was injured by a tear gas canister.
Wine’s lawyer, George Musisi, said that police fired tear gas “indiscriminately” at Wine and his supporters, resulting in his injury. Police are investigating the incident, and spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke stated that both Bobi Wine and three officers were injured in the altercation.
The incident is seen as another example of the shrinking democratic space in Uganda under President Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled for nearly 40 years.
