Senior officers of the Gabon military claim they have taken power because the Presidential elections lacked credibility.
The group of officers appeared on Television on Wednesday after President Ali Bongo was declared winner of the Gabon elections.
In the Television broadcast, the Gabon military officers said they had cancelled the elections, closed the nation’s borders, and dissolved all state insititutions.
Bongo was declared winner of the Gabon presidential election after he was announced to have secured 64.27% of the votes.
Bongo’s victory marks his third term leadership in office as Gabon President.
The Gabonese Election Centre (CGE) announced the results on Wednesday morning following the election that was marred by delays.
While announcing the result of the polls, Election chair, Michel Stephane Bonda said Albert Ondo Ossa came second with 30.77%. Bongo’s team rejected Ondo Ossa’s allegations of electoral malpractices.
Ossa decried the absence of international observers, the suspension of some foreign broadcasts, the authorities’ decision to block internet access and impose a nationwide night-time curfew after the poll had raised concerns.
