On Monday night, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak spoke by phone with President Paul Kagame about the disputed plan to send refugees to Rwanda.
The leaders are “committed to continue working together to ensure that this vital partnership is delivered successfully,” according to a Downing Street statement.
Despite resistance, the UK government’s plan to send some asylum seekers to Rwanda was upheld by the British High Court in December 2022.
The plan’s detractors had claimed that it violates human rights laws and that Rwanda is not a safe location for asylum seekers.
The British government will present plans for a new legislation banning individuals from entering the country through unofficial channels on Tuesday.
