Bayern Munich advanced to the 2022/23 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals thanks to a goal from Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting against the Cameroonian’s former club Paris Saint-Germain.
Bayern had won in Paris three weeks earlier, but they had to work hard in the first half at the Allianz Arena. Kylian Mbappe had already put Yann Sommer to the test when he scored but was called back for fouling the Bayern goalkeeper in the build-up. Soon after, Mbappe fired into the side netting, but Lionel Messi was denied by a superb triple block from Alphonso Davies, Matthijs de Ligt, and finally Sommer.
Bayern responded in kind, with Jamal Musiala and Joshua Kimmich warming the palms of Gianluigi Donnarumma, but they owed it to de Ligt to be level at the break. After Sommer made a mistake in possession, the Bundesliga Rookie of the Month nominee made a spectacular goal-line clearance to deny Vitinha.
The frantic action continued into the second half when Davies blocked Mbappe’s goal-bound shot. Bayern retaliated in kind, with Danilo fending off Choupo-Moting before having a goal ruled out for offside against Thomas Müller. But it was third time lucky for the ex-PSG striker just past the hour, tapping in Leon Goretzka’s pass after Müller had dispossessed Marco Verratti to give Bayern the lead.
Sommer kept the Bundesliga leaders’ two-goal aggregate lead intact with a spectacular one-handed save from Sergio Ramos, who headed a golden opportunity off target in the closing stages.
Substitutes Joao Cancelo and Serge Gnabry combined to seal the victory. Senegal striker, Sadio Mane had a third goal ruled out for offside as Julian Nagelsmann’s team marched into the quarter-final draw with a perfect record in this season’s competition.
