The Chicago Sky has named Nigerian coach Rena Wakama as an assistant coach under Head Coach Tyler Marsh. This announcement comes after the team previously added Courtney Paris and Tanisha Wright to its coaching staff.
“Rena has proven that she has a winning mindset and attitude,” Marsh said. “We’ve seen her success this past summer with the Nigerian National Team at the Olympics, building on an impressive winning record and extensive background in coaching and player development. She is an excellent young leader and coach who will make a significant impact on the Sky’s program.”

Wakama made history in 2023 as the first female coach to win the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title with Nigeria’s D’Tigress. Additionally, she led the team to the quarterfinals of the 2024 Paris Olympics, achieving the best-ever finish for an African basketball team at the Games. Her accomplishments earned her the FIBA Best Coach award.
With her strong foundation in player development and a proven track record of success, Wakama is expected to play a crucial role in the Sky’s coaching efforts for the upcoming WNBA season.
