An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale struck Tibet on Monday evening, days after a more powerful quake on January 7 caused extensive destruction and loss of life.
The latest tremor hit Dingri County in the Xigaze area of the Tibet Autonomous Region at 8:58 pm local time, according to the China Earthquake Networks Centre (CENC).
The region is still recovering from the 6.8-magnitude earthquake earlier this month, which resulted in 126 fatalities and left 188 others injured.
Monday’s quake, occurring at a shallow depth of 10 km, adds to the challenges faced by the affected communities and rescue teams.
Since the January 7 disaster, the area has experienced over 640 aftershocks, highlighting the region’s seismic vulnerability.
The Chinese government has mounted significant relief and rescue efforts to aid those impacted, with ongoing operations aimed at providing shelter, medical aid, and infrastructure recovery.
