A cholera outbreak has killed nine people in Soku community in Akuku-Toru local government in Rivers State.
The number of casualties is feared to increase if efforts are not made to alleviate the threatening health condition in the oil-rich community-based in the Kalabari kingdom.
The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has reached out to Soku community through its rapid response medical team, which includes doctors, nurses, and other relevant health workers.
The NDDC through its spokesperson, Tony Okocha, confirmed the sad development, stating that the intervention was in a bid to save the lives of residents in the community.
Cholera is most likely to occur and spread in places with inadequate water treatment, poor sanitation, and inadequate hygiene.
Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).
Soku Community is one of the major oil-producing areas in the south-south state of Rivers, which began oil and gas exploitation in 1958.
The community is host to the Ekulama 1 and 2, the Oil Real Development (ORD), and the Soku Liquefied Natural Gas Plant.
