Choupo-Moting’s PSG lose out in Champions League final as Bayern win sixth European title

Cameroon striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and his PSG side lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich in this year’s UEFA Champions League final played behind closed doors in Lisbon, Portugal.

The 31-year-old scored a late winner for the French team in their 2-1 win over Italian side Atlanta in the quarter-finals and was brought in as a substitute in the 80th minute to replace Argentina’s, Angel Di Maria.

But his introduction had little impact in the closing moments of the game as the German Champions held out to secure their sixth Champions League trophy.

Another African in the French side – Senegal’s Idrissa Gueye, was an unused substitute on the bench at the Estadio da Luz.

Bayern grabbed the winner when French winger Kingsley Coman headed in Joshua Kimmich’s cross in the 59th minute in a tense encounter that ended goalless at halftime.

PSG had the better chances to take the lead in the first period but saw their efforts in front of goal from superstars Neymar and Kylian Mbappe thwarted by Bayern captain and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who produced some fine saves during the game.

Neuer, 34, also brilliantly stopped an attempt from Marquinhos from close-range with his right foot in the 69th minute and was named man of the match.

Bayern striker Robert Lewandoski – top scorer this season with 15 goals and in Europe overall (55) – couldn’t find the back of the net to add to his tally. But the 32-year-old Polish international did turn inside the box to strike the ball which hit the post with 21 minutes into the game.

Lewandowski also found space inside the 6-yard area in the 30th minute in between two PSG defenders but his header went straight at Keylor Navas in goal for Parisians.

Bayern’s victory means they have now become the first team to win every Champions League game in a seasons campaign to emerge as Champions.

The German side has now also completed a treble-winning season, having already won the Bundesliga and the DFB Pokal.
