Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has commended the decision to award East Africa the hosting rights for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania submitted a joint bid that was approved, while a joint bid by Nigeria and Benin was unsuccessful.
Museveni expressed his approval on X (formerly known as Twitter), stating that “common sense” guided the organisers’ choice to award the tournament to East Africa. He highlighted the benefits of a pan-African effort and the pooling of sports infrastructure, such as stadiums, as factors that made the East African bid attractive.
He praised the decision as “logically unimpeachable” and extended his blessings to East Africa and its people.
Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu instructed the sports ministry to prepare adequately for the tournament, including completing the construction of modern stadiums in Arusha and Dodoma.
Kenyan Deputy President William Ruto emphasised the region’s determination to deliver a world-class football event in 2027 and praised the successful hosting bid. Morocco also won the rights to host the AFCON 2025 games.
