Following the legislative elections on October 7, diamond tycoon Sam Matekane is scheduled to take the oath of office as Lesotho‘s new prime minister at Setsoto Stadium in Maseru.

His Revolution for Prosperity party, which was founded earlier this year, won the popular vote but fell short of winning an absolute majority in the 120-seat parliament, forcing the Alliance for Democrats and Movement for Economic Change parties to create a coalition administration.

Over 30 heads of state and government have been invited to the swearing-in ceremony, according to the official website.

No political party in Lesotho has received enough votes over the past ten years to establish a government on its own.

As a result, the nation has been governed by coalition governments that have been contentious, and no prime minister has ever held office for the whole five years.

Since 2012, the tiny monarchy in Southern Africa has suffered political unrest, with a coup in 2014 and three national elections in five years.

Recall, on October 15, Moeketsi Majoro resigned as the country’s Prime Miniter following the loss of the ABC political party, in the just concluded, heavily contested polls.

Majoro handed over his resignation letter to King Letsie III. The King has accepted the letter and has requested Majoro to remain in charge until the swearing-in of the new Prime Minister.

Sam Matekane is a Mosotho businessman and politician. He is the founder of Matekane Group of Companies and was awarded Forbes Africa Businessman of the year in 2021.
