A documentary spotlighting the opposition campaign led by Ugandan singer-turned-politician Bobi Wine against President Yoweri Museveni’s regime has secured a nomination for an Oscar award.
Titled “Bobi Wine: The People’s President,” the documentary is nominated in the Best Documentary Feature Film category, alongside four other documentaries, including the Tunisian production “Four Daughters.”
Expressing his gratitude, Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, stated, “It is such a humbling moment to see the Ugandan story make it to the Academy Awards – the most prestigious and significant awards in the world.”
“Today, the fight for democracy in Uganda and around the world lives on. Thank you for this recognition!” he added.
Bobi Wine, who contested against President Museveni in the 2021 presidential elections, faced allegations of manipulated votes, resulting in widespread protests by opposition supporters. Human rights groups reported security forces causing casualties and detaining thousands of protestors during the election period.
The singer-turned-politician has been arrested and detained multiple times for criticising President Museveni’s rule. Recently, security forces lifted a five-day blockade at his home, a measure taken to prevent his participation in a planned protest.
President Museveni, in power since 1986, faces accusations from critics of suppressing dissent.
