Equatorial Guinea’s football federation has imposed an indefinite suspension on striker Emilio Nsue, citing “several episodes of serious indiscipline” during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations held in Ivory Coast.
During the tournament, the 34-year-old emerged as the top scorer, scoring five goals in four matches, despite Equatorial Guinea being eliminated in the last 16.
Additionally, midfielder Iban Salvador from the National Thunder team has also been suspended for his involvement in an “unpleasant incident” in Abidjan on January 29th, the day after Equatorial Guinea’s 1-0 defeat by Guinea, leading to their exit from the competition.
The Equatoguinean federation (Feguifut) stated that Ivorian police had to intervene, causing a delay in the squad’s return to Equatorial Guinea.
Recently, Nsue was in Abidjan to receive the golden boot following Ivory Coast’s victory over Nigeria in the Nations Cup final.
Nsue, formerly with Intercity and having played for clubs like Birmingham City and Middlesbrough, holds the record for the highest number of international goals for Equatorial Guinea, with 22 goals to his name.
The National Thunder’s upcoming competitive fixtures are slated for June, coinciding with the scheduled 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
