The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has appointed Finidi George as coach for the Super Eagles. George was previously an assistant coach at Enyimba.
Here are five things to know about the new Super Eagles gaffer.
1. Former Super Eagles Star
Finidi George is a well-known figure in Nigerian football, having enjoyed a successful playing career with the Super Eagles.
As a former winger, he represented Nigeria in several international tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations.
2. European Football Experience
Finidi George gained valuable experience playing in top European leagues, notably with Ajax Amsterdam in the Netherlands and Real Betis in Spain.
His time in Europe exposed him to high-level football and honed his skills as a player.
3. Coaching Career
Following his retirement from professional football, Finidi George transitioned into coaching. He has held various coaching roles, including serving as an assistant coach to Jose Peseiro.
His coaching experience and understanding of the game makes him a suitable candidate for the interim coaching role, and he would be hoping he can get the job on a permanent basis.
4. Managerial Role at Enyimba
Currently, Finidi is the Chief coach of one of Nigeria’s leading football clubs, Enyimba FC.
His tenure at Enyimba has provided him with firsthand experience in managing a team and handling the complexities of football management.
He led Enyimba to their ninth Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title last season.
5. Temporary Appointment
Finidi George’s appointment as the interim coach of the Super Eagles comes after the departure of Jose Peseiro. With his wealth of experience as a player and a coach, George is expected to tinker the side in the right direction.
