Sunusi Ibrahim, a former top scorer of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), has signed a three-year contract with Major League Soccer team, Montreal Impact.
Impact are based in Quebec, Canada but compete in the MLS and currently has some African players on their payroll.
The club is managed by Arsenal and France football legend, Thierry Henry.
Impact announced Ibrahim’s signing on Tuesday from 36 Lions Academy. The bulky attacker, however, won the top scorer’s gong on the books of Nasarawa United.
Ibrahim, 18, will team up with Impact’s U-23 team, according to a statement from the club.
“The Club is very happy to have completed the transfer of this young player, who is already part of his country’s U23 squad despite his young age,” said sporting director Olivier Renard. “It’s a great addition to the squad, especially considering several European clubs were very interested in him as well. Sunusi Ibrahim is a fast and powerful striker who can also play on the wings.”
The player had a trial at Watford in England in late December but a move didn’t seem to materialise.
He will be joining Kenyan international, Victor Wanyama, Uganda’s Mustapha Kizza and Senegal’s Clement Diop as the African players on Impact’s books.
