Gbenga Daniel, currently serving as a senator representing Ogun East, has made a heartfelt plea to Governor Dapo Abiodun, urging him to cease his monthly pension entitlements as a former governor of Nigeria’s Ogun State.
Having recently assumed his role in the 10th National Assembly’s red chamber after winning the February elections, Gbenga Daniel took to Twitter on Friday to announce his decision. Motivated by a strong sense of “good conscience,” he expressed his desire to suspend the payment of N676,376.95, which he receives on a monthly basis.
In a letter accompanying his tweet, Gbenga Daniel shed light on his circumstances since leaving office in 2011. Contrary to popular belief, he disclosed that, apart from the pension, he has not availed himself of any additional benefits, including medical support, transportation provisions, or even furniture assistance.
He stated, “After my inauguration at the senate, I wrote H.E Prince Dapo Abiodun MFR, CON on June 14, 2023, to notify him of my decision to have the monthly payment of N676,376.95 kobo being gross payment for my pension and allowances as former governor of the Ogun state suspended immediately,” he tweeted.
“This decision, I made, in good conscience, moral principles, and guiding ethics.
“It is also important to state that this is the only payment and package I get from the state government as a former governor.”
Senator Gbenga Daniel wrote a formal letter to H.E Prince Dapo Abiodun MFR, CON on June 14, 2023, elucidating his intentions to forgo the N676,376.95 kobo monthly payment, which serves as his gross pension and allowances as the former governor of Ogun State. Through this decision, he aimed to align himself with his deeply-rooted moral principles, guiding ethics, and unwavering sense of conscience.
Gbenga Daniel emphasized that the pension and allowances were the sole remunerations he received from the state government, drawing attention to the fact that he had no other vested interests or financial benefits.
It is worth noting that Gbenga Daniel served as the governor of Ogun State from 2003 to 2011.
