The former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan has been shot in the leg in what his supporters referred to as an assassination attempt.

The convoy of Khan, 70 was shot at, which led to a protest march in Wazirabad, in eastern Punjab. This is coming after his call for snap elections after being removed from office seven months ago.

The former premier was quickly moved to a nearby hospital with the injuries sustained in the foot. One of his supporters lost his life during the attack.

“A man opened fire with an automatic weapon. Several people are wounded. Imran Khan is also injured,” party official Asad Umar said. Officials later said that Khan was safe and had been taken to hospital.

Police arrested a suspect immediately at the scene and police later released a video of him in custody, allegedly confessing to the shooting and saying he acted alone.

District police officer Ghazanfar Ali said one person was killed and nine others were hurt in the attack.
