Gas Explosion Leaves Several Injured in Johannesburg

Joburg-CBD (News Central TV)

A suspected gas explosion ripped through the central business district of South Africa’s commercial capital of Johannesburg on Wednesday evening, leaving many persons injured.

Parts of Lilian Ngoyi Street collapsed after what was initially suspected to be a gas line explosion.

The blast overturned taxis and several other vehicles, while one of the streets in the city “seemed to have been split wide open,” ER24, an emergency medical service, said in a statement. “Initial reports from the scene showed that several people had sustained minor to moderate injuries,” it said.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi visited the scene of the incident, saying nine people were confirmed injured. The injured persons were taken to hospitals around the city centre. He said no deaths had been reported at this stage.
