After opposition and former President, John Dramani Mahama raced on to an early lead in the Ghanaian Presidential election, incumbent Nana Akufo-Addo has rallied back.
In results from another four regions, released by the Electoral Commission of Ghana, Mahama won in two regions by slim margins while Akufo-Addo won by a heavy margin in NPP’s stronghold, Ashanti.
The commission added results from the Savanna, Upper East, Western, and Ashanti regions to the seven it released earlier in the day.
Recall that News Central earlier reported Mahama was leading by 500,000 votes. In a new turn of events, after results from four regions were announced and certified, Akufo-Addo is now leading by at least 400,000 votes.
In the Savannah region, Mahama of the NDC defeated Akufo-Addo by a difference of over 64,000 votes. In the Upper East region, he defeated the incumbent by more than 100,000 votes. Akufo-Addo on the other hand defeated his opposition by less than 100,000 votes in Western Region but won by a landslide in Ashanti with a difference of over a million votes.
As it stands, by the results announced, Akufo-Addo has a total of 3,986,803 votes while Mahama has 3,528,894 votes.
The electoral commission is yet to announce results from five regions with Greater Accra being the next decisive region to be called. There was a delay in announcement of results after an unexpected rainfall on Monday.
The electoral commission, as a result, extended announcement indefinitely.
Almost 17 million voters trooped out to vote in the election.
