Ghana’s ruling party, New Patriotic Party (NPP), has welcomed the decision of opposition leader and former President, John Mahama, to challenge the results of December 7th General Elections.
The NPP describe the Mahama’s appeal to the Supreme Court as appropriate and democratic.
News Central reports that incumbent President Nana Akufo-Addo of the NPP was re-elected in the first round of the presidential election after securing 51.59% of the votes.
Mahama polled 47.37%.
Mahama described the results as flawed and rejected them as the opposition party NDC resorted to protests across the country demanding the declaration of what they say is the “true results”.
After three weeks of various forms of protests by the largest opposition party, Mahama filed a petition with the country’s apex court on Wednesday to challenge the presidential results.
Reacting to the petition on Thursday, Yaw Asamoa, the Director of Communications for the party, in a statement in Accra, said, “Indeed, the responsible, appropriate and democratic means of determining election disputes is by resorting to the courts.”
Asamoa also called for an end to all acts of violence in the country.
