The planned transition to green energy by the government of Ghana has suffered delays due to the unavailability of a nuclear power plant.
This was recently disclosed by the executive director of Nuclear Power Ghana, Stephen Yamoah.
According to the top official, the country is behind schedule for the transition to have one or two nuclear plants functioning by 2030.
Yamoah explained that construction should have begun but the state-run company is yet to identify a suitable vendor.
“We should probably have been starting construction now, but we’re still engaging to identify the [right] vendor,” the company’s chief said.
He described the issues hindering the transition to green energy as “financial” rather than “technical”.
Yamoah further stated that the Ghanaian government is still speaking with China, Russia, France, the US, and South Korea towards building the needed nuclear plants.
The urgency to switch to cleaner forms of energy such as green energy has grown recently as climate change in the form of global warming continue to leave grave impacts.
