Days before the first round of Tunisia’s presidential election, the country on Saturday began three nights of televised debates between the candidates, a rare event in the Arab world. The showdown between the 26 hopefuls is seen as the highlight of the campaign and a turning point in Tunisian politics ahead of the September 15 vote.

The nation has been praised as a rare success story for democratic transition after the Arab Spring regional uprisings sparked by its 2011 revolution. Called “The road to Carthage: Tunisia makes its choice”, the programme was broadcast on 11 TV channels, two of them public, and about 20 radio stations. 

“We won’t be able to escape it,” said a smiling Belabbes Benkredda, founder of the Munathara Initiative which promotes open debate in the Arab world and helped organise the event. 

The first hour-and-a-half debate on Saturday night involved eight of the candidates, including Abdelfattah Mourou of the Islamist-inspired Ennahda party, and passionate secularist Abir Moussi, head of a group with roots in the party of former dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

There was also an empty space for the controversial media mogul Nabil Karoui, currently detained on money laundering charges. “Tonight I am deprived of my constitutional right to express myself in front of the Tunisian people,” Karoui wrote on Twitter. 

“They dare to speak of democratic and transparent elections despite the absence of the basic principle of equal opportunities.”

‘Heated debates’

The stage, at the studios of public TV channel Wataniya, placed candidates in a semi-circle with two journalist moderators at the centre. The questions were set by the journalists and randomly selected and allocated to candidates on Friday.

Each candidate had 90 seconds to respond to a question and could be asked a follow-up question or interrupted. At the end of the show, candidates were given 99 seconds to outline their manifestos and campaign promises.

Tunisians gathered in cafes to watch the debates, their eyes riveted to TV screens as if they were following an important football match. Oussama, 33, said the debate had been “cold and devoid of clashes”, although it had at least allowed him to cross some hopefuls off his list. “But we’re proud because all Arabs everywhere were watching us this evening,” he said.

Open competition

Beyond the organisational and technical elements, organisers highlighted the rare nature of the event. “Often in the Arab world, when we speak of competition we know who wins at the end, with 99.99 per cent. Today, we don’t know who is going to win”, said Lassad Khedder, head of a private TV channel syndicate in Tunisia.

Pay Attention: African Union re-admits Sudan after civilian transition

“Tunisian voters haven’t yet decided,” said political analyst Ziyed Krichen. Thousands of votes one way or the other “could radically change” the country, he added. Indeed, the plethora of candidates, political programmes and issues, has led to a uniquely unpredictable election.

Many Tunisians say they are counting on the debates to help them make their decision. “It’s unprecedented! As a Tunisian journalist, I am proud and impatient to see this,” said Monia Dhouib, a member of the organising committee. 

But such debates are not entirely without precedent in the region. In 2012, 15 months after the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak, Egypt organised a historic televised debate between two favourites among the 13 candidates running for president.

The winner of that election, the Muslim Brotherhood’s Mohamed Morsi, was deposed by the army following massive protests a year after he took office. Munathara Initiative’s Benkredda said, “the culture of debate doesn’t yet have a place in the Arab world”.

But he noted that the Tunisian debates will also be broadcast by channels in Iraq, Algeria and Libya. The hope is, he said, that this “first step will serve as inspiration” for other Arab countries.

A statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in Abuja, Buhari joined all family members and friends of the veteran journalist in celebrating the milestone.

President Buhari recalled, with delight, Daura’s remarkable brilliance from childhood at the Katsina Middle School and Government College which caught the attention of Northern Regional Government.

According to him, this feat earned him sponsorship for further studies in the United Kingdom in the 50’s and many years to follow, noting that the knowledge had, over time, only translated into more wisdom.

Mamman Daura at 80

The President rejoiced with the renowned journalist and bibliophile, who worked with the civil service for a while before joining the New Nigerian newspapers, where he rose to be Editor and Managing Director, before venturing to the private sector as an entrepreneur.

He noted that Daura had inspired industrial growth in the north in furniture making, textile manufacturing, aluminum smelting, and other investments.

President Buhari assured Daura that his footprint on the development of the country, and quintessential attention to family values, would always be remembered and appreciated.

He also extolled him for the visionary role he played in the banking sector and management of companies and development institutions.

The President prayed that the almighty God will grant longer life to the elder statesman, and more strength to keep pursuing his number one passion of serving humanity, especially through philanthropy

Innovative changes have over the years, proven to be a constant. Ways of doing things are changing globally at a rather fast pace; things that affect the way we live, the way we travel, study, do business, run homes and families, interact with others etc.

The influence of innovation is simply overwhelming! One sector that has been touched by the transformative wind of innovation is the business sector. In this article, we are going to evaluate the growth of digital marketing in Africa. Before we dissect the topic, let us first look at the meaning of digital marketing.

What is digital marketing? 

Wikipedia defines digital marketing as the marketing of products or services using digital technologies, mainly on the internet, but also including mobile phones, display advertising, and any other digital medium. From the definition provided by Wikipedia, one may sum up the meaning of digital marketing as the use of technologies in marketing as opposed to the traditional ways of marketing we all know.

Before the digital era, marketing and advertisements were only done using traditional methods such as public announcements, newspaper, radio, television, billboards, posters and flyers. Digital marketing on the other hand employ methods such as social media marketing, search engine optimization (SEO), search engine marketing (SEM), e-Commerce marketing, content marketing among other methods.

Advertising has been taken to a whole new level through the help of online marketing. Business owners, especially startups in Africa now save millions hitherto used in running newspaper advertisements and paying for sessions on television channels that expire after a short time. They now spend less than half of that amount to advertise on various digital platforms, which enjoy more audience than the traditional means, including television and newspapers. 

The state of online marketing in South Africa

 In South Africa, a study by World Wide Worx in collaboration with Cisco Internet Business Solutions Group found that as at the year 2010 the number of South African internet users have grown beyond 5 million. Ever since figures continued to advance upwardly.

By 2016 the number of internet users stood a little below 29 million. That was more than half of South Africa’s 52 million population. With that number of internet users, digital marketing will continue to grow in leaps and bound in South Africa.

Kenya and Digital Marketing

In Kenya, the story is pretty much the same as in South Africa. If you are familiar with Kenya’s marketing terrain, you will understand how big it has grown in a very short period.  Just a couple of years ago, expensive traditional methods of marketing still thrived in the country but today the story has changed as around 22% of all media consumption in Kenya is digital.

What is more, this number is growing fast! The German online portal, Statista reported that Internet advertising spending in Kenya is expected to grow from US$72 million in 2015 to US$151 million in 2020.

Digital marketing in Nigeria

Digital Marketing started to gather momentum in Nigeria around 2012 with the entry of e-commerce platforms such as Jumia and Konga in the country. The period between 2015 to 2019 saw a massive increase of Small & Medium Enterprises in the country with a population of 190 million people.

According to Statista, Nigeria had 92.3 million internet users in 2018 and it is projected to grow to 187.8 million internet users in 2023. This was 47.1 per cent of the population in 2018. It is expected to climb to 84.5 per cent in 2023. With 92.3 million people using the internet, the place of digital marketing in Nigeria’s business space has been secured. The prospect for the growth of digital marketing in Nigeria seems pretty good.

From the situation reports in South Africa, Kenya and Nigeria – three of the largest economies in Africa, digital marketing is growing really fast in the continent. The future of Businesses in Africa can now be viewed better through the lens of the digital.

Burna Boy promises to donate part of proceeds from South Africa show to Xenophobic attack victims.

Burna Boy has indicated his readiness to perform in South Africa and donate part of the proceeds to victims of the xenophobic attack.

Months after weighing in on xenophobic attacks in South Africa, Burna Boy has confirmed his preparedness to perform in the country.

In a recent tweet, Burna Boy noted that the show, which is tagged Africans Unite, will be the first of many.

The African Giant singer also hinted that he will be donating part of the proceeds from the show to victims of xenophobic attacks in the country.

Part of the proceeds will be donated to the victims of Xenophobic attacks by me!” Burna Boy’s statement said in parts.

On Wednesday, October 23, 2019, a South African online platform reported that Burna Boy will be in South Africa for a concert.

In September, Burna Boy had weighed in on the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa vowing not to step in the country again.

The ‘African Giant’ further narrated how he suffered a Xenophobic attack in 2017 and had since refused to return to the Nelson Mandela country.
