As Nigeria marks its 64th Independence Day anniversary today, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has emphasised the need to strengthen institutions and foster a strong democratic culture to ensure peaceful, transparent, and fair elections in the country.
In his Independence Day message on Tuesday, Jonathan reflected on Nigeria’s progress since gaining independence in 1960 and praised the nation’s journey towards democratic governance.
“Today, we mark a significant milestone in our nation’s history. It is the 64th Anniversary of Nigeria’s independence whenn we remember and adore our nationalists who fought and brought an end to colonial rule.
“Since 1960, we have come a long way, making measured strides in various sectors and overcoming countless obstacles, in our journey of nationhood,” he said.
Jonathan noted the achievements made in various sectors, including 25 years of sustained democracy since the end of military rule in 1999. He also highlighted economic growth and Nigeria’s commitment to unity and national cohesion. However, he acknowledged that the country still faces challenges in security, economic development, and infrastructure.
The former president urged Nigerians to focus on deepening democracy by strengthening institutions and promoting a democratic culture that guarantees peaceful and transparent elections, which he described as the foundation for good governance, national unity, and peaceful coexistence.
“For us to deepen the roots of our democracy and foster inclusive economic growth, we must strengthen our institutions and develop a good democratic culture that will support peaceful, transparent, free and fair elections. This is the basis for good governance, sustainable democracy, national unity and peaceful coexistence.
“As a nation, we must recommit to the principles of justice, equity and inclusion. We must harness our diversity, tap into our youth’s potential, and leverage our natural resources for the benefit of all,” he said.
He encouraged Nigerians to remain hopeful and resilient, expressing confidence that, with collective effort, the nation can overcome its challenges and achieve the prosperity and unity envisioned by its citizens.
