World number two and home favourite, Jannik Sinner withdrew from the Italian Open because of an injured hip. He was among those tipped to win the Championship and the news will be hugely disappointing for the Italian fans.

Sinner joins world number three Carlos Alcaraz on the sidelines after the Spaniard announced he couldn’t participate in Rome due to a right forearm injury.

Sinner, 22, became the first Italian man to win a Grand Slam singles title in nearly fifty years after winning the Australian Open in January. He added titles in Rotterdam and Miami before withdrawing from the Madrid quarterfinals with an injury.

He is on an incredible 28-2 for the season.

“It’s not easy to write this message but after having talked with doctors and specialists again about my hip problems I have to announce that unfortunately, I can’t play in Rome,” Sinner on his social media handle

” I’m very sad that I didn’t recover, it being one of my favourite tournaments ever. I couldn’t wait to come back and play at home in front of the Italian crowd. I will still come to Rome for a few days and stop by the Foro Italico.”
