Reports indicate that Israeli airstrikes near Aleppo, Syria, killed an undisclosed number of people on Monday, including an Iranian military advisor.
Israel has not yet commented on the strikes. This is the first incident involving the death of an Iranian official since the attack of April 1 on the Iranian Consulate in the Syrian capital, Damascus. That attack killed seven people, including two Iranian generals and a member of Lebanon’s militant Hezbollah group.
Iranian state media outlet Tasnim reported that Iranian military advisor Saeed Abyar died in the Aleppo airstrike, but provided no further details.
Syria and Israel have been in a state of war since Israel’s foundation in 1948. Israel has previously targeted Iranian positions and equipment in Syria.
These events unfold as Israel is engaged in conflict with Hamas in the Gaza Strip and conducts separate strikes on targets in Lebanon. Meanwhile, Hezbollah is carrying out cross-border attacks on Israel.
