A 23-year-old Kudzayi Brighton Tembo who escaped from Chawagona Hapana Prison, Monday is suspected to be somewhere in Bindura, 88 km northeast of Harare, Prison services in Zimbabwe have warned.
A senior officer in the service said Tembo allegedly escaped on Monday at around 10 am while working in the prison’s nearby field.
“He was wearing a black t–shirt and is of average height and complexion, with a Manica accent,” the officer said.
Tembo was jailed for five-year jail over burglary and theft charges and was only eligible for release in 2026.
The service has pleaded with members of the public to report any sight of him to their nearest police station, rather than take the law into their own hands.
“We urge members of the public to desist from taking the law into their hands by abusing the fugitive.
“Just effect a citizen arrest and hand him over to police,” said the officer.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has commenced a search for the fugitive who is suspected to have taken the northern route.
