Bandits in Katsina State reportedly ambushed and killed Major A.G Mohammed, an officer of the 17 Brigade, Nigerian Army on Thursday evening.
Major Mohammed was part of Operation Hadarin Daji and oversaw military operations in the Vantumaki, Dan Ali, and Kankara areas of the state.
The incident took place at Malali village in Kankara local government area, where he was called to respond to an attack on the village.
“As you know, Malali is along Zangon Pawwa road, and that area is completely taken over by bandits. Whenever there is an attack the security agents usually ask for reinforcement from the Maraban Dan’Ali camp, and this new commander would promptly respond.
“This time around, they asked for his reinforcement and he came using a Hilux vehicle, instead of the Amoured Personnel Carrier (APC), perhaps the APCs were not available at the time. Unfortunately, his assailants waylaid his vehicle and shot him in the head,” the source stated.
The tragic news was announced by security analyst and counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, on his X profile on Friday, April 26.
Makama wrote:
“The news of the demise of Major Ag Mohammed of 17 brigade Katsina State, Operation Hadarin DAJI is indeed heart-wrenching.
“Mohammed paid the supreme price while combating bandits in the North West of Katsina State.
“Until his death, he serves as the commander covering Yantumaki, Dan Ali and Kankara Axis. He was one of the most gallant, courageous and highly dedicated officers.”
Public Relations Officer of the 17 Brigade in Katsina, Oiza Ehinlaidlye, is yet to confirm the incident at the time this report was filed.
