The Kaduna State Government has announced plans to plant 10 million trees over four years as part of its afforestation programme to combat climate change and protect the environment.
Commissioner of Environment, Abubakar Buba, revealed the initiative during a stakeholders’ meeting in Kaduna on Wednesday. He noted that the state had already planted 1.7 million trees in 2024 and aims to double the number in 2025.
Buba highlighted the critical role of trees in absorbing carbon dioxide and urged residents to plant and nurture them across cities, suburbs, and villages.
The programme, described as a step towards a “greener and cleaner Kaduna State,” was commended by Buba as an initiative of Governor Uba Sani, whom he praised for his environmental focus.
In addition to tree planting, the government is addressing flooding by de-silting 140 kilometres of urban drainages and dredging River Kaduna and other water bodies to improve water flow.
Buba also acknowledged the governor’s increased allocation to environmental projects in the 2025 budget, emphasising the administration’s commitment to implementing the plans.
