In response to an order from the Kano State government, the Kano State Police Command has declared the strict enforcement of a 24-hour curfew, which commenced at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, and is scheduled to conclude at 6:00 PM on Thursday, September 21, 2023. This move is part of critical measures aimed at maintaining law and order within the state.
Kano State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Usaini Gumel, emphasised the significance of preserving law and order in the region. The police have promptly deployed combined security forces extensively across the city, covering all corners, entry points, and exit points, with the primary objective of ensuring the populace strictly adheres to the curfew.
Commissioner Gumel issued a stern warning, stating, “Residents of Kano State are warned that violating this curfew order will have serious consequences. Anyone found in violation will be arrested and made to face the full force of the law.”
Furthermore, the commissioner expressed his gratitude to the peace-loving citizens of the state, urging them to maintain their law-abiding nature during this challenging period. The enforcement of the 24-hour curfew reflects the government’s commitment to safeguarding the security and well-being of Kano State residents, particularly in light of prevailing circumstances.
Kano State Governorship Tribunal Ousts Abba Kabir Yusuf, Declares APC’s Gawuna as Victor
Earlier on Wednesday, the Kano State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal removed Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf from office, consequently declaring Nasir Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the March 18 election. This decision has brought about a significant shift in the political landscape of Kano State.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who contested under the banner of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), had initially been declared the victor of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). However, this outcome faced a legal challenge when Nasir Gawuna, his APC counterpart, raised concerns about the election’s fairness and validity.
The three-man panel of the tribunal delivered its verdict on Wednesday, asserting that Governor Yusuf’s certificate of return, issued by INEC, be withdrawn. In its place, the tribunal directed that a certificate of return be issued to Nasir Gawuna.
A pivotal element of the Kano State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal’s decision was the deduction of 165,663 votes from Governor Yusuf’s total tally, deeming them invalid votes. These invalidated votes were associated with ballot papers that lacked the necessary stamps or signatures, rendering them ineligible in accordance with electoral regulations.
